Greenland will Become a Separate State |
Soon, in order to visit Greenland, tourists should obtain the special Greenland visa. In November of the year 2008, there will be a referendum on enlarging the autonomy, taking place on the icy island. As said by Associated Press, the inhabitants of Greenland hope, that in the future this will allow them to create their own state.
On November, 25 of the year 2008, the Greenland inhabitants will poll on changes, proposed by the special Danish-Greenland commission, which had analyzed the new powers that could be conferred to Greenland authorities.
Beginning from the year 1978, Greenland gained the right to manage its domestic affairs all alone, though international and defense policy as well as lawmaking where still the privileges of Denmark.
Greenland, the biggest island in the world, has been Danish colony from 1775. In the year 1953 the island was claimed to be the part of the territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. In April of the year 1941, the Denmark delegate in Washington has signed a so called convention on the defense of Greenland with American government, after what USA started creating military bases on the island. After Denmark had joined NATO, there was a new agreement signed between Copenhagen and Washington in the year 1951, according to which, Denmark and USA are now together defending Greenland.
Presently, 57 thousand people are living on the island, the 80% of surface of which is covered with ice.
