Liverpool Became the Cultural Capital of Europe |
Last Friday Liverpool hosted celebrations on occasion of the beginning of the year during which this city shall serve as the cultural capital of Europe. Celebrations in the centre of Liverpool began with performance of the ex-Beatle Ringo Starr and Dave Stewart, the member of the duet “Eurythmics”.
Approximately 600 artists shall appear on the stage during the evening. The amount of people who have come to listen to the concert made up about 30 thousand people. Friday concert was the first of the series of events meant to celebrate the new status of Liverpool. More than 1300 artists shall perform in the city at weekend.
During the year, Liverpool shall host approximately 350 concerts and exhibitions. Local authorities hope that they shall attract to Liverpool approximately 2 million tourists from all over the world.
In June Liverpool shall host performance of Paul McCartney who is looking forward to the concert in his native city. “This year shall be wonderful. I am very proud of my city and I am looking forward to greeting you there and helping you to have a good time”, McCartney said.
In 2003 when Liverpool was declared the next cultural capital, a lot of people were surprised, since favorites were considered such British cities as Gateshead and Newcastle, rather than the seaport Liverpool. However, Liverpool that had been carrying out its advertising campaign under the slogan “The Whole World in the Single City” managed to win the honorary title.
Cities pretending to the title of the European cultural capital are determined according to the list that stipulates in what year each of the EU countries may enter its cities in participation in the contest.
The cultural capital is determined by the special commission consisting of 13 members. Seven of them are named by the EU, and the remaining six – by the country whose city is competing for the title of the cultural capital.
Starting with 2007, the winner-city receives the grant in the amount of at least 1.5 million Euro.
As a rule, the title of the cultural capital of Europe attracts in the city 12% more tourists than usual. However, according to citizens of the cities that had already served as temporary cultural capitals of Europe, the benefit from this title consists not only of incomes from the tourism industry.
According to Charles Bell, manager of the company “Culture and Sport Glasgow”, “this title changes the international view of the city completely”. Glasgow that served as the cultural capital of Europe 18 years ago is called one of the most successful examples of the cities participating in the program. |
