A Housing Estate for Birds Built in Thailand |
According to the agency “Reuters”, a housing block for birds is being built on the ocean front, 120 kilometers to the south of Bangkok, Thailand. The erected buildings are meant for producing nests of swiftlets, the local swallows.
Their nests are used for cooking a delicious dish - soup “made of swallow’s nests”. A plateful of such soup costs more than 20 dollars in restaurants. One kilogram of the raw material, the production of which requires at least 150 birds, costs approximately two thousand dollars.
The construction of each of one hundred four-storied houses costs approximately 97 thousand dollars. Each building may house up to 20 thousand birds.
Each house has its own “marketing” peculiarity for attracting its “dwellers”. The surface of inner walls is rough, imitating the surface of stone inside the caves, the natural birds’ habitat. The low temperature inside the houses is maintained by means of a water-cooling system. Music, accompanied by birds’ chirping, is played in the houses.
To build a nest of the “market” size, a couple of swallows needs five days. Collectors receive three nests before allowing birds to lay eggs.
Production of “domestic” nests is much safer than traditional methods of their procurement, during which “nest catchers” have to climb rocks in search of caves where the birds build their nests. |
