The accident of 17 January that happened to Boeing 777 of the company “British Airways”, the safest airplane in the world, once again urged many people to serious considerations. Certainly all air companies have once suffered from accidents, but this does not mean that they are unsafe. However, there are companies with almost no such accidents in their history.
The 87-year old Australian company “Qantas” had several serious accidents during the first days of its existence. However, if safety means the number of miles covered by the air carrier without accidents with lethal outcomes, “Qantas” remains the safest air company. This definition also suits hundreds of other companies, including “EasyJet”, “Aer Lingus” and “Virgin Atlantic”.
The EU black-list of the most dangerous airlines was issued in November. According to this list, all air carriers of Equatorial Guinea, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan and Liberia were prohibited to enter the EU airspace. For example, “Garuda”, the national carrier of Indonesia, has had 14 accidents with lethal outcomes only during the last 50 years.
What airplanes are the safest? Before the incident in Heathrow, Boeing 777 and Airbus 340, which have been used only for several years, had had the smallest number of accidents. As regards the list of the safest airplanes, based on the average number of incidents, neither of them can provide 100% guarantee. Just as Wilbur Wright (one of the Wright brothers, American engineers, inventors and aviators) would have said, “If you are looking for absolute safety, you should better sit on the fence and count crows”. |
