On the threshold of the desired season, brave and fanatic mountain skiers offer up rather strange prayers. They ask the sun not to melt down the eternal mountain snow and implore the summer not to hurry up. They are waiting for this glacial period seized by a single cherished thought, “Mountain skiing is the best way to spend the winter”. Skiers open a new global religion, and thousands of extreme pilgrims set out on their journey to spend the winter on the best routes of the European Alps. Portes du Soleil (the Sun Gate) is one of the most sacred places for those skiers who adore rushing down from the mountains.
The place received such a poetic name not by chance. Skiing through the “gate”, a skier or a snowboarder finds himself in an enormous fantastic snowy place, illuminated by the sunrays – dozens of mountain ski resorts, hundreds of slopes and thousands of kilometers of routes. For the real experts the phrase “I have skied in Portes du Soleil” sounds like “I have bathed in the Pacific Ocean”.
The sensation of skiing is intensified by the fact that the territory of Portes du Soleil is unequally divided between Switzerland and France. Thus, the routes often run in such a manner that the top of the slope is situated in France and the bottom - in Switzerland. Location of the “Sun Gate” is so unique, that during descent and ascent you may in turn admire the mirror surface of the Lake Geneva and the sparkling top of Mont Blanc. And if a skier manages to turn round while rushing at crazy speed or performing virtuoso elements, he shall see the real luxury of the Alps: Serre Chevalier, Courchevel, Chamonix, Meribel and Avoriaz – the real skiers’ paradise. At this point the “Sun Gate” opens for everyone: for experienced riders and beginners of mountain skiing, for enduring and fanatic ones, and of course for simple lovers of winter skiing. After visiting this place, each skier makes sure that the “Sun Gate” destroys all borders instead of establishing any of them. |
