In connection with rapid fall of the rate of American dollar and pilgrimage of European tourists to New York caused by it, some Manhattan shops betrayed their old tradition and started accepting payments in Euros.
A lot of shops, situated close to the frontier with Canada and Mexico, have long been accepting Canadian dollars and Mexican pesos respectively. However, such practice has not been used in New York shops so far, despite the big number of foreign customers.
Enterprising owners of shops, specializing in sale of the goods popular with tourists, have noticed that many of their customers are Europeans who uselessly carry Euros in their wallets. After placing announcements “Euros are accepted” they significantly raised their turnovers: tourists with remains of Euro willingly spent it for various cheap (considering the current rate) knick-knackeries.
Due to the record fall of the American dollar, citizens of the EU countries, in which Euro is circulating, profit from spending their vacation in the USA, despite high prices for air tickets. Nowadays, New York is witnessing an unprecedented tourism boom: according to the Mayor’s Office of the NYC, the number of tourists who visited the Big Apple last year made up 46 million people i.e. more than the population of Spain or Poland. |
