Travelers Got Wormy Abroad |
A married couple with two small children from one of the northern regions of Russia became victims of the exotic journey. In the middle of the winter they decided to warm themselves in the tropical sun of the Philippines and spent there two unforgettable weeks. On the last day of their stay at the resort it suddenly started to rain. Therefore the head of the family asked to place the tent and the dinner table right on the beach. Both parents and children were barefoot.
After an hour or so the tourists felt stitching in their feet. The next day they started to feel itching. When the travelers examined their feet, they were horrified: there were numerous red twisting lines resembling worms under the skin of their feet, their youngest son of one year and a half having the biggest number of worms. Adults’ feet (especially father’s feet) were less affected. The doctors whom the family consulted on arriving in their native country have never seen anything like that. Therefore the head of the family had to consult the doctors from the capital.
It turned out that all the family members were “attacked” by the larvae of the so called cat’s hookworm. This parasite gets into the soil, particularly into the sand, with cat’s excrements. The man recalled that he had often seen these animals on the beach. The larvae have probable activated under the effect of moisture. And the fact that the youngest son had been affected most of all is explained by the easiness with which parasites get into the tender childish foot.
By the way, the small child shall have the hardest time: he is too young to be cured with drugs. Therefore the doctors have no choice but to keep their small patient under observation and wait till the parasites die naturally (human body is not their habitat). However, the doctors are afraid of an inflammation in the child’s foot. |
