Very soon the passengers of Egyptian airlines will be allowed to use cellular telephones freely. To provide their clients the mobile communication service, airlines must obtain a license for the installation of special equipment and then must be tested annually.

In accordance with the project, every plane will be equipped with a small apparatus which will provide the communication of the plane with the space communications satellites and the ground receiving stations. This equipment will operate within a radius of 100 meters and its functioning will not disturb the control and communication systems of the plane and of the ground services.

The only restriction on the usage of mobile telephones during the flight must be obeyed during the takeoff and landing: the passengers will have to keep their telephones off during half an hour after the takeoff and during the same period before the landing. When the plane is at a height of 6 thousand meters the passengers will be informed about the possibility to turn on their telephones.

It is supposed that in 2008 the cellular communications service during the flight over the territory of Egypt will be available in 12 planes of the local airlines. According to experts, the possibility to use mobile phones during the flight, probably, will cause the increase of prices for air tickets.

The first airline which gave its clients the possibility to talk by their mobile telephones, to send and to receive text messages and to use the Internet became Emirates Airline (UAE), on January 1, 2007.

The company reported that it spent more than $27 million for the acquisition of the technology which allowed passengers to use cellular telephones during the flight without disturbing the navigation system. Passengers pay for telephone calls in accordance with the billing rates of the international roaming plus some cents for the bearing of charges for the elaboration and the implementation of the innovation.

Australian Qantas Airline allows to use mobile communications during internal flights. British BMI Airline and Portuguese TAB are planning to introduce such systems by the first quarter of 2008. In March Ryanair also will join them. Indian Kingfisher Airlines, Chinese Shengzhen Airlines, Air Asia and Royal Jordanian have begun the testing of the cellular communication systems too.

In summer, 2007, the Airbus Corporation announced that it came to an agreement with the controlling units of the EU and the passengers of airbuses hauling over Europe will be able to use cellular communications, to send E-mail and text messages. The producer of airplanes also told that the members of the cabin crew will be allowed to use cellular telephones only in silent mode, that means to use only the SMS service and E-mail.

The price of such service will be very high - to send a text message during the flight will cost 50 American cents.

However, it is not known when the cellular communication service will be available for the air passengers in the USA. Some time ago the American Federal Communications Commission once again approved the ban on the usage of cellular telephones during the flight.

The Americans are worried that the usage of cellular telephones during the takeoff can cause disturbance in receiving and sending signals in the ground systems. The authorities of the country, being under pressure from the airlines, admit the possibility of reconsideration of the issue about the usage of cellular telephones in the future, when they have additional technical information.

Over the last years some airlines, referring to the latest research studies, persisted that these problems are solvable thanks to the modern technologies introduced by the telecommunication companies.
