A cigarette-stub with the height of a three-storeyed house in the center of London |
On the Trafalgar square in the center of London there was a giant cigarette-stub installed, as if it has been put out in asphalt. The stub with the height of 9 meters and 1,5 meters diameter has been edified as a protest-sign because of the huge amount of the cigarette garbage that filled the streets of the British cities after the introduction of the smoking ban in public places. As soon as the people were disallowed to smoke in restaurants and pubs, the amount of the cigarette-stubs thrown out on the streets has significantly increased and now 80% of the garbage on the streets make up stubs and empty cigarette packs.
"We have welcomed the smoking ban introduction, because it made our pubs and restaurants to places more comfortable to rest at. But unfortunately, we observe now the epidemic of smoking that "contributes" the pollution of our streets",- said the director of the social movement "Keep Britain Tidy" Phil Barton.
With the edification of the giant cigarette-stub on the Trafalgar Square, the "Keep Britain Tidy" movement plans to start the national campaign against smoking and pollution of the streets. It is supposed that at the bus stops and public toilets there will be about 10 thousands of posters, warning about the inadmissibility of the throwing of the cigarette-stubs. The activists of the campaign will also visit pubs in the whole country and call their visitors to give up smoking and to keep the streets clean. |
