New islands are formed in the Adriatic Sea |
According to the group of researches from USA, Italy, Croatia and Great Britain, a new ridge of the islands can appear in the nearest times near the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea. The geologists note that today Croatia and Adriatic sea are already popular touristic routes, now the list of the local natural beauties can be enlarged by the youngest islands on the planet.
The formation of the islands happens because of the slow but solid tectonic movements, Moreover, these movements slowly shorten the distance between Croatia and Italy.
Richard Bennett, the American geologists from the Arizona University tells that today Croatia has 1185 Dalmatian Islands, known as picturesque touristic directions. But in the nearest years in Adriatic there will appear also new islands that will increase the amount of the Dalmatian Islands.
Bennett tells that with the help of the modern satellite technologies a joint team of Croatian and Italian specialists has composed a topographic map of the Adriatic Sea, located between the two countries. According to the data of the analysis, based upon the scanning results, it has been revealed that the Italian peninsula slowly moves towards Croatia. The average closing speed in about 4 millimeters per year.
"This is not really much, there is plenty of islands that move 10 times faster, but if Italy and Croatia will merge - and this will happen - so the Adriatic Sea will disappear",- tells Bennett.
There is an opinion that the Adriatic Sea is located at the top of a branch of the African tectonic plates. These plates are surrounded by the large Eurasian plateau from three sides that constantly presses the tops of the tectonic plates, what lifts these up. According to the geologists, exactly at the junction places the new islands are being formed.
However, the Adriatic Sea has not much time left - about 50-70 million years, what in geologic scales is a tiny amount of time. And after that there will be neither Adriatic nor Dalmatian Islands. |
