A Carnival in Rio de Janeiro was Concluded with the Parade of Winners

The carnival of the year 2008 in Rio de Janeiro was concluded with the grand parade of winners.

On Saturday night samba schools, taken the first six places, have once again come on the legendary Sambadrome with their dances. The performance has taken place in front of the overcrowded grandstands. The cheap tickets for the performance were already sold out on Friday, though the day before one could only buy tickets for VIP-loges, the prices for which start from 700 dollars, but there were also long lines for them too.

The results of the Carnival-2008 were reported on the last Wednesday. The best among the 12 schools of “special group” – a some kind of Carnival’s major league – became “Beija-Flor”, the name translated from Portuguese means “hummingbird”. It dedicated its colorful show “The Fantastic Journey to the Center of the World” to the richness of culture and nature of the north Brazilian state of Amapa, and its capital situated in both hemispheres at a time – in the North and in the South ones.

Each school was judged by the board of 40 judges in ten categories on the ten grades scale, where seven is the minimal mark. The important criteria are: the main music theme of samba, the development of the plot, harmony and eurhythmy of the dancers, imagery of suits and stage sets.

There were several great scandals accompanying this year’s Carnival. Thus, it was forbidden by the court for the “Viradouro” samba school to perform an allegory on the theme of Holocaust, and the administration of “Mangueira” school has resigned due to the accusation in the belonging to drug business. The weather was also unkindly to the competitive, and in the first day of performance of the “major league” some participants went through the Sambadrome in the pouring rain.

The results of the competition itself have also given rise to an ambiguous appraisal. The judges have given victory to “Beija-Flor” the fifth time for the last six years, though its performance was not perfect if compared to the other strong competitors. According to the observers, this can point to the bias of the board. In the year 2007 the school was already suspected of the bribery of the judges, but the court could not prove the validity of the accusation.

However, scandals and bad weather didn’t spoil the atmosphere of the holiday. During all the competition the Sambadrome’s grandstands were overcrowded, daily assembling up to the 60 thousand spectators. Due to the intense policing, the serious accidents in the traditionally unquiet Rio de Janeiro were avoided.

By the estimates of the Secretariat for Tourism of Rio de Janeiro, up to 700 thousand people visited this year the world famous show. They should give the town’s budget all together about 510 million dollars.
