Already this summer in several world airports there will be setup passport control gates, equipped only with scanners (without the border control officers), recognizing the biometric data of the passenger and comparing it with the data in the passport. The powerful machines, as the authorities affirm, will do it better and quicker as the officers of the passport control service.
A test project of such kind will be started this summer for those who enter the European states and the Great Britain. All passengers with the new biometric passports can use the scanners.
However, there are apprehensions that some passengers could have a very negative reaction against the result of their check by the machine. It is supposed that such passengers can take a place to the queue to a usual passport control officer that can let the passenger through based on his own opinion and using the additional information and instructions. The reason is that the scanners are set up to close the gates for 100% of people that are in the police lists, but the existing technology admits a possibility of failures towards people being under suspect. As the result, the machine can reject those people that are being suspected, but there is no confirmation - such people are not in the lists. |
