No more clean places on Earth |
Even the most distant parts of our planet are in the zone of the toxic activity of the industrial age. Tis conclusion has been made by the American experts in ecology science field, that have researched the levels of industrial intoxication in various ponds and their inhabitants and also in the plants of the USA national parks. As they have revealed, there are more than 70 toxic or polluting substances including pesticides and heavy metals at the territory of the 20 national parks. The most distant from the big cities and industrial centers - the Denali Alaska and also that parks that by their size - represent an almost closed ecosystem like "Glacier" in Montana, "Big Bend" in Texas and "Yosemite" California.
"The polluting substances are being delivered through the atmosphere, there are no clean places",- said a participant of the research, the professor-naturalist from the Oregon University Michael Kent. "You can hardly find more distant areas as the northern parts of Alaska and the tops of the Rocky Mountains, but we found the pollutive substance there also",- he noted.
Among the substances found in the national parks there are such "satellites" of the industrial revolution like quicksilver and polychlor-difeniles and also the long ago prohibited insecticides DDT and dildrin. These can cause health problems - in particular the diseases of the nerve system, appearance of various immunodeficiencies and the reduction of the reproductive function.
The research has been held between 2002 and 2007 and has the total cost of 6 million dollars. The scientists appreciate the results as "extremely worrying" and appeal to take the necessary measures to reduce the pollution of the environment. |
