"One million trees" - under this slogan in the United Arab Emirates takes place the campaign of the trees planting in the country. The Emirates group of the environmental protection, being the initiator of the trees planting, has called all the inhabitants of the UAE to take active part in this event.
The biggest part of the territory of the country is occupied currently by the desert. Though, a couple of thousands years ago there were rivers here, the land was covered with dense verdure and in the forests there were various species of animals. This is confirmed by the archaeological research that have performed digs in the western part of the UAE. In particular, there were found the fossilized remains of an elephant, cheetah, antelope, crocodile, ostrich, giraffe and the roots of various trees. These findings have confirmed the hypothesis of the scientists that the currently completely covered with desert sands territory has been a real flourishing land in the past.
Of course, there is no possibility to turn these times back, but, according to the local authorities, it is quite real to make the look of the country more green. So, in 2007 there were more than 1,5 million of the green plantations planted, that have significantly improved the look of the Emirate cities. It is planned that in 2008 another million of trees will be planted in the country. The representatives of the Emirate environment protection group consider that the green plants will help to improve the ecological situation and will create a positive environment for the future generations of the citizens.
It should be noted that the trees planting in the UAE is a very hard task. There are not more than seven rainy days in the year, so the trees, bushes and grass are cultivated with the use of artificial irrigation. Almost every tree in the country has it's own water supply, what significantly increases the costs of the planting work. Exactly the artificial irrigation has moved UAE at one of the first places in the world in the water consumption rating. If the usual daily normal water consumption of an average world person is 180 liters, in the Emirates this amount gets loser to 500 liters. But in spite of such significant financial expenses, the Emirates authorities have firmly decided to realize the planting plan in the country. |
