A number of popular resorts can perish. However, tourist field keeps draining the last blood from them.
In the region of the Caribbean Islands there is 7% of the whole world population of coral reefs – this is one of the main factors which attract millions of tourists here. Now corals are killed by the “white plague” – Serratia marcescens bacteria, usually living in the human’s intestines. Due to the poorly cleaned sewage runoffs these bacteria have killed more than 90% of corals in the Caribbean Sea during the last 10 years.
One more trouble for corals causes water overheating, caused by global warming. The scientists beat the alarm, forecasting the fatal changes of the ecosystem of the whole world ocean (corals protect the land from tsunami and hurricanes) in the future, if the mankind will not protect the nature. But the prohibitive measures will hardly help in the region, where only the Great Barrier Reef brings $975 million of profit per year thanks to the fans of diving.
The most popular Thai resort of Phuket undergoes hardship with potable water – it is not enough of it even for five star hotels. The large consumption of water by tourists can cause rioting among the local population, which saves water.
In the Spanish Majorca, which also attracts millions of tourists, there are also interruptions with potable water. Last year the government started delivering water to the resort with marine tankers. As in Phuket, the local population also frowns at the visitors, who consume the precious potable water supplies without any economy.
Chilean ocean resorts still suffer from the industrial pollution. The resorts on the eastern coast of Philippines, well-known for their turquoise waters, suffer from the cutting-down of the coastal mangrove trees, which protect the coast from storms, filter water and contribute to the reproduction of the fish. |
