The wireless access technology Wi-Fi continues to conquer the world, in spite of the appearance of the new and quicker network access methods. In the last 6 months of 2007 it and other technologies that are included in 2,5G and 3G have been actively developing around the world and have found their appliance in the individual usage and in business. Most quickly the popularity of Wi-Fi has been developing in the business-users sphere - the second half of the year 2007 the amount of the hot-spots in companies has increased by 89%. Such data has peen published in the annual iPass company report that has presented the latest version of the Mobile Broadband Index report.

The experts note that in 2007 the European cities have become most Wi-Fi covered, leaving American and Asian cities behind. Globally in iPass, they have counted more than 90 000 of public access points (excluding wireless access in hotels and airports), most of them are located in the company offices and are supposed for working purposes. If at the beginning of 2007 the Europe had only 31% of the access points, by the end of the last year this amount was already by 40%, while the USA part went down from 59% to 51%. The most wireless city of the world became London, where the amount of the Wi-Fi access points have been increased by 156% reaching the amount of 28 720.

Another region with the huge growth of the wireless access is Latin America, where the access points amount has been increased by 133%, what led to the inclusion of Brazil into the top 10 of the Wi-Fi users. At the city level the high dynamic has been shown by Tokyo (+118%), Singapore (+72%) and Munich (+90%).

iPass notes that the main growth factor of the Wi-Fi popularity is the attendance of the cities by the businessmen and tourists. In other words, the growth tempo of the Wi-Fi access point amount depends on the development and popularity level of the city.

If we look at the report data from the view of the individual Internet access with the usage of Wi-Fi, here the leaders are the airports, that have gathered 45% of the total connects, but they are pursued by the hotels that quickly develop the wireless infrastructure and offer it to the guests - in this category the increase made up 146%.

But the real boom of the second half of the year 2007 is such access possibility as "mobile Wi-Fi", that means the equipping with wireless abilities of the trains, buses and planes. This option has become very popular in Japan and in the North of Europe (Sweden and Norway). In general, in the second half of 2007, the amount of the mobile access points have been increased by 238%.
