In 2008 Munich will organize the summer, full of grandiose celebrations - the capital of Bavaria will celebrate it's 850-th anniversary and the citizens are planning to celebrate this event properly. For an European city 850 years - is not an age. But what really admires - is how a monastery has been developed into city, that became an European culture centre.
For a long time Munich has been keeping the reputation of a city, where the words "joie de vire" (joy of life) obtain their true sense, remaining the city that is open to all new and modern. The motto of the anniversary celebration is "Bridges creation" - what means the unity of the city that has been founded 850 years ago - with the modern, bright, multi-colored and at the same time traditional city culture.
The first information about "Munichen" as a monk settlement, are encountered in the records dated by X-XI-th centuries. However, the 1158 is the year that is officially stated as the foundation year, when the Duke of Bavaria and Saxonia Heinrich the Lion from the Wolf's dynasty has destroyed the customs bridge over the river Isar and has built his own one higher off the river. The routes of the merchants since that time were always planned through Munich. In XII-th century Munich has become the property of the Wittelsbach dynasty and a little bit later - the capital of the Bavarian Kingdom that has existed till the beginning of the XIX-th century.
The celebration will be held in several stages. From the 14-th till 15-th of June the City Foundation Festival will be held - the annual city festival that will be this time much wider as a normal local event and will be dedicated to the celebrating event. On 19-20 of June the Old Town Ring Road Festival will take place, that supposes musical concerts and theatrical events. On the 1-3 of August the Isar Bridge Festival will be held - the most romantic one, with lights installations, concerts under the bridge and dancing on the shore.
On the weekends during the whole summer the guests of the city are welcome at the various events, such like cabaret, concerts, expositions and much more. |
