Fried potatoes museum has been opened in Belgium |
This is the most beloved by the Belgians dishes that they call "frites", or "French potatoes".
The museum is located in the very center of the Brugge. The visitors can get acquainted not only with the history and receipts of the "frites", but also with the history of the appearance of potatoes in Europe.
The Belgians affirm that the world famous garnish that has been named "French potatoes" after the British soldiers that have tried it in Belgium during the World War I, has been served for the first time in Flandria (northern Belgian region) already in the 16-th century.
As the Belgian professional friture snack bars association that unites 5 thousands of cafes tells, the true "frites" should be up to 10 centimeters long.
During the cooking the potato chips are dipped into the boiling oil "bath" twice. First time is to get them fried inside and the second time - after several minutes - to achieve the crust.
It is curious that from one kilogram of potatoes come out only 540 grams of "frites". Today they are primarily cooked from potatoes, imported from Canada, because of the poor harvest in Belgium. |
