In the night of November 13-th 1970 a powerful typhoon has attacked the coastal areas of the Eastern Pakistan. The hurricane wind power has led to appearance of a waves with the height of eight metes that rushed over populated islands and coastal areas of the country. This was one of the largest catastrophes in the human history; the amount of victims, according to various information was from 500 thousands till one million people. Totally, as the result of the catastrophe more than 10 million people suffered. The typhoon has resulted a colossal material loss, destroyed the highways and railways, bridges and wiped out from the Earth's face whole villages.
On the 19-20th of September 1974 there was a natural disaster in Honduras Republic. The hurricane, which name was "Fifi" has resulted colossal destructions. Winds reaching 200 km/h speed and powerful rains have wiped off lots of settlements, destroyed the crops and banana plantations, destroyed about 80% of the industrial companies of the country. This hurricane has taken more than 10 thousands of human lives and about 600 thousands of the country inhabitants became homeless. "Fifi" has also touched the territories of the neighboring countries - Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa-Rica, Salvador and Mexico.
In October 1998 the "Mitch" hurricane has rolled over the countries of Central America and has destroyed whole towns and villages. In four countries that have suffered at most - Honduras, Nicaragua, Salvador and Guatemala - 11 thousands people died. Another 10 thousand were considered lost and thousands have lost their homes. In the countries that suffered from the natural disaster almost 80% of the crops has been eliminated. The total financial loss of the property and infrastructure of the four countries made up about 5 billion dollars.
At the end of December 2004 in the Southern and South-Eastern Asia there was the most powerful earthquake for the last 40 years. A series of the underground quakes has aroused a tsunami. The most serious destructions were caused to the places, located on the coasts of India, Indonesia and Sri-Lanka. The total amount of the deceased made up at least 225 thousands. Among the victims there were also the foreign tourists that were having their rest on the local resorts. The total amount of people that suffered from the catastrophe was about 2,2 million and 1 million of people became homeless.
On the 23-30th of August 2005 the most destructive in the United States history hurricane "Katrina" has taken lives of more than 1800 people. Thousands of people have remained without homes. Most of the victims lived at the Louisiana coast, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia and Alabama. The damage is about 75 billion dollars. |
