Queen's day in the Netherlands |
The 30-th of April - is the birthday of the former Queen Julianne and the day of the start of the reign of her daughter Beatrix. It is one of the most important and joyful national holidays in the Dutch calender. The flags are proudly put up and music bounces everywhere and millions of people come out to the streets.
The current Queen - Beatrix has decided to support the mother's idea and this festival became the part of the national culture. Each city turns into a huge fair - bright orange stripes are everywhere, people wear orange hats, scarfs, t-shirts (the color of the Orange dynasty). The city choirs enchant this day, all shops are closed but the streets turn into a huge market, because the attics of the citizens are full of treasures that can be sold. On the Queen's day the citizens of the Netherlands can trade on the streets without special permission.
In the Haag, where the residence of the Queen is located, these celebrations begin already in the evening of the 29-th of April and last till the morning. This is the famous Queen Night - KoninginneNach with free rock and pop concerts. In the morning the epicenter of the holiday moves to Amsterdam. Gorgeous parades, concerts, theatrical shows and simply street attractions are everywhere. Boats with musicians float along the city channels with fireworks.
According to the tradition, Beatrix with the other members of the family each year on the 30-th of April visits one or two cities of the Netherlands. So, you have the chance to meet the Queen personally.
"The flea markets" and the spirit of freedom that reigns in the capital of the Netherlands during this celebration - attract millions of tourists. |
