Gosh, how many factors are threatening the wild nature in Kenya. The poachers are killing elephants and rhinoceroses because of the precious tusks ans horns, young masai are hunting for lions, considering that only after the kill the king of the animals, they receive the status of the full-fledged man and have the right to get married. More and more areas are used by the farmers for their needs, what makes the original inhabitants of the lands to seek for another shelter. And recently this list of problems has been increased by another additional one. The Luo tribe, dwelling in the West of the country, has found out that the meat of the two rarest species - the horse-like antelope and the Rothschild’s giraffes has astonishing taste properties.

The horse-like antelopes are at the worst position. Their population has been reduced by 33% during the last two years in these places. The real amounts are more frightening - from 85 to 56 specimen. Besides of the tasty meat, this animal has wonderful fur coloring, the horns are used to produce flutes and the skull is considered to be a lucky talisman and is being used with the fishing boats. Even the threat of arrest and imprisonment does not frighten the Luo, that consider it to be a real luxury to have the meat of the rare animal at the wedding table.

The Rothschild’s giraffes are not more lucky. There are less that a hundred of them in Kenya, mostly in the western and central areas. Their meat is also a delicatessen and the slaughter of the giant of savanna proves good hunting abilities of one or another clan inside of the tribe.

The wildlife preservation in Kenya tries to apply the necessary measures to save the animals, but it is a quite hard job. And if the rare giraffe species are still secure in the national park of Nairobi, in a nearby located giraffe-center, where these animals can be fed from the hand, so the situation with the horse-like antelopes is much more complicated. The attempts to migrate them to the other districts have failed that the national park Ruma - the only place of their living - lacks of the authorities attention because of it's small sizes and the remote location from the main roads, what does not really help to attract tourists here.
