About a third of all the air travelers are afraid of flying. And some people are refusing flights at all because they are unable to master their panic about it. And a flight is much more safe than for example a road trip - and this is proven by the statistics.

So, why people are afraid of flying? Psychologists think that this happens because we are afraid of exactly those situations where there is no escape from. People are less afraid of a road accident because subconscious we all think that the chance to survive in it is much greater. Though much more people die in accidents than in the flight catastrophes.

Aerophobia appears differently among men and women. Women are afraid of exact events - accident, fall down, terrorists attack or their own uncontrolled reaction during the flight and men - the process of flight itself - at a high altitude and in a strange machine that cannot be controlled.

Multiple researches have proven the link between the ability for panic reactions in general and the aerophobia in particular. In most cases aerophobia can be understood as the appearance of the more global psychological problem - the disposition to panic reactions. This ability, getting more acute during depressions and stress situations, can hibernate during the psychologically comfortable life periods.

Aerophobia is rarely isolated from the other personality properties and the subject of the panic becomes everything that is connected to the air travel and in all other situations a person does not suffer from anything similar. Besides, the aerophobia fear structure can be different: it could be the fear for catastrophe because of the technical malfunctions or natural disasters (fear for the uncontrollable destructive conditions of the environment).

Others are afraid that something could go wrong with their health during the flight - they could feel themselves worse or there will be a heart attack or stroke because of the pressure change and other reasons - and there is no escape from the closed airplane cabin and there is no possibility to get medical help (a variety of claustrophobia). There are also even cases when a person is afraid of getting into panic (fear for losing control over oneself).

This is only a general list of the reasons and forms of fears. It is surely not complete, but anyway, each of them (as with any other phobia) can be generalized to the two main of them: fear for death and fear for losing control over oneself.

However, we need to fly and we have to get accustomed. Sometimes it is possible to get distracted during the flight - to blow the thoughts about the danger away - read a book, listen to the music or watch a movie. Some people use tranquilizers or alcohol to get rid of the exultation.

The modern psychotherapy has lots of medication and non-medication methods of phobia treatment and also particularly against aerophobia. However, there is no universal cure. Probably this is the reason why aerophobia has the image of an incurable disease.

The success of the treatment, according to the psychologists, depends always on the careful analysis of all the individual conditions and state in every particular case of the person that has the phobia - the search of the reasons of the sickness.

With the use of this approach it is usually revealed that even in the case of an isolated phobia, in spite of the evident simplicity of the psychic state, it's reasons are not so evident as it could appear at first glance. The key to the solution of this medical problem is certainly located in the analysis of all peculiarities, including the hidden ones and the reasons of the fear for flights.
