Rafting in a black as tar Ruakuri |
At the date of the 20th anniversary of The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company, the founders of this extreme kind of recreation activities, Pete Chandler and John Ash were awarded the medals for their contribution in tourism industry.
Everything started at the beginning of 1980s, when Chandler being a student of Waikato Geological University and an amateur to rummage into the caves was the first one who had undertaken the descent along the subterranean cave flowing through Ruakuri cave (the fracture of limestone rock formed 30 million years ago).
In 1987 Chandler united his efforts with another “cave explorer” Ash so that they founded “The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company”. In fact this is more exactly tubing than rafting, but in this case such hyperbole is justifiable.
“First only some brave persons were infatuated, afterwards it turned out to be a spectacular tourist entertainment allowing people of all ages to go on a ride on waves, jump or just swim in sparkling underground wonderland”.
Many people come for tubing in Ruakuri labyrinth from the whole world but mostly from Great Britain and USA. New-York tourist agency “ShermansTravel” brings here up to 4 million people monthly and recently it has included The Black Rafting in the list of ten most extreme recreation activities.
And this actually impresses a lot. As Grant Davidson said, the chairman of training centre at the party dedicated to the 20th anniversary: ”I would have never thought that you would make business by making people get wet, feel cold and feel themselves miserable?” But upon the remark of Davidson himself, an adventure as a term is something with unexpected end. From the moment when you plunge into Ruakuri Stream waters and disappear under the ground until you see the sun shine again, an element of uncertainty and mystery is preserved. .
The most breathtaking river section is named “den of dogs”, where you should swim in chain, having joined the legs together in twisting narrow passage.Neoprene suits were changed into warm sweaters with scarves, the lamps on liquid crystals were replaced with carbide ones, but the subterranean river remained unchanged - and still it is a quiet, mysterious place.
