Cat saves the Japanese railway company from bankruptcy |
The Japanese railway operator Kishikawa has hired a cat. The duties list of the 9-years old cat with the name Tama is quite short: it should sit dressed in the uniform of the company at the entrance of one of the stations and to pose for pictures with numerous tourists that according to not really explainable to the European mind reasons are gathering to this place from all the places of the country of the Rising Sun.
The visitors are buying lots of various souvenirs with Tama's image: postcards, erasers, note-blocks and pens. The "Diary of Tama, the Station Master" with lots of pictures of the cat is also of great demand.
It is worth noticing that the appointment of Tama has happened during quite a hard time for the Kishikawa company: every year less and less people were using the services and the company became to lose funds. According to the 2007 financial results, the railways have lose more than 500 million Yen (about 5 million dollars).
But after the appointment of the cat, the passenger traffic has increased by 10 percent and the management could take a deep breath.
It is unknown of course if Tama is the main reason of the sudden popularity growth of the company, of maybe the business of the Kishikawa became getting straight on it's own and the cat became just a good marketing trick. But there is a popular Japanese belief that cats really bring luck.
Anyways, Tama has recently been promoted to the "Super Station Master" and got additional food bonus for the perfect job. |
