The homeland security department of USA has announced that the officers of the American border control will have the right to take away any document of electronic device that contains data at the border crossing.
The officers can detain documents or electronic devices or copies from them for a reasonable term to allow more detailed check. The check can take place at the border control point, as well as in another place. The department also tells that the electronic devices can be detained for three weeks.
So, any person that is headed to USA, having a notebook, photo camera, communicator, cellphone or any other device that is able to store or to contain information, can lose his gadget at the customs.
The officers can study documents, books, articles and other printed material, as well as computers, discs, hard drives and other electronic or digital data storage devices. Such check is a part of the current practice and is very important for the revealing of the information that could be interesting for the law enforcement institutions.
As the excuse for such control measures applied to all people that enter USA, the officers are offering the necessity of the struggle against terrorism, drugs traffic, child pornography and collection of the information about the copyright violation and evidences of the violation of the trade embargoes.
Earlier, the head of the homeland security department, Michael Chertoff has announced that the most dangerous smuggling is often carried on the notebooks and other electronic devices and there were cases, when their checks have revealed "severe jihad" contents and also child pornography. |
