Honestly speaking, Italy might have been just a little less rich in different things. Sicilian gelato and the falling tower. David by Michelangelo and the football club “Juventus”. The week of high fashion in Milan and collapse of the Roman Empire. Cipollato, Cipolotto, Cipoloccio and Bertolucci. But Italy does also have mountains in addition. The mountain-ski season opens in the Alps on 8 December. This temptation is as unconquerable as Spartakus at the dawn of the revolt.

In 2006 Turin served as the capital of the XX Winter Olympic Games, and the mountain-ski resorts situated in its outskirts have proudly included competitions they had hosted in their CVs. Snowboarders worked wonders in Bardonecchia. Mountain-skiers competed in speed in Sestriere. Cesan hosted biathlon, and Saux d’Oulx hosted freestyle.

Turning investments into reputation, the Italian reconstructed a separate regional base, evened the slopes, fixed additional snow guns, made new routes and took care of apre-ski. Saux d’Oulx is especially famous for its night life. At first, people celebrate a good skiing day in restaurants and bars of the English kind, and then imposingly move to discotheques.

Saux d’Oulx is the extreme left resort of the 400 kilometer long skiing area Via Lattea which is translated as “The Milky Way”. It borders on many-sided like Guy Julius Caesar Sansicario. You shall find black and red routes starting from the Fraiteve Mountain, as well as children’s park with inflatable funny installations here. Sansicario’s upper star neighbor is Sestriere, the most snowy and straight-out resort of Via Lattea. In most cases extreme mountain-skiers come here to test their strength on the Olympic routes.

Cesana is the central constellation of the Milky Way. Both impetuous Sansicario routes (it takes 8 minutes on the new elevator “Cesana Ski Lodge” to get there) and woody slopes of the Moon Mountains, officially belonging to the Clavier resort, are available from there. In ancient times Cesana was connected with the French Montgenevre through a passage used by Hannibal, the implacable enemy of Rome, in his campaigns. The international traffic can still be observed here, however, its purposes are peaceful. Since the ski-pass is common, many holiday-makers go to the French side for a day to touch the snow, listen to French pronunciation of “r’s” and taste the onion soup. People whose interest in France cannot be satisfied with the soup only, should settle down in Clavier (since it is cheap) and visit the country of the Bourbons and Bonaparts every day if they wish.

If you prefer Margaret of Savoy to Anne of Austria, you should book a hotel room in Gressoney San Jan or in Gressoney la Trinite. Her castle, the five silver towers among the strict pines, is situated not far from here, in the place of Belvedere. However, the Gressoney sheltering at the foot of the mountain range Monterosa is worth visiting not only due to Margaret’s beautiful eyes. This region is one of the best places in the Alps for random skiing. Unlike France, Austria and Germany, helicopter delivery is allowed here, and the guides practice in developing a most terrific routes. From Italy to Switzerland and back, along the untouched glacial ledges, passing the frozen fountains, over cracks and through fir-trees – after such a journey you always wish to exchange your city registration for a mountain guide’s certificate.

Monterosa is a part of Valle d’Aosta, a proud northern valley, where French is spoken along with Italian, and Mont Blanc is competing with Matterhorn in the number of object-glasses pointed towards them. However, the first place all the same belongs to Monterosa which got its name due to pink sunset shadows on glaciers. The most convenient place for shooting them is Champoluc, situated to the left of Gressoneys. All Monterosa resorts, including the extreme right Alagna, are connected by a chain of elevators and a common ski-pass.

And a good place for admiring Mont Blanc is Courmayer, one of the most respectable Italian mountain ski resorts. A mink coat, diamonds and a toy-terrier at a dinner in a restaurant shall not surprise anyone, and its cuisine reaches the height of Mont Blanc. Its elevators serve as the place of the most perspective acquaintances, and the sunglasses of the most famous brands reflect the latest models of mountain-ski suits.

However, Courmayer is also respected by dashing people, Dons Carleone of the snow kind for proximity of Shamoni to its White Valley (a random descent from the glacier Egui du Midi which should be conquered by each self-esteeming skier, especially a snowboarder, at least once in his life). Besides, Courmayer is not far from the Swiss Verbier a cult, free-ride and joyous place.

Similar public gathers in Bardonecchia, crazy snowboarders, who have little many but a lot of energy. 100 kilometers of routes and endless expanses for free ride, half-pipe, a parallel giant slalom and a snowboard-cross – on remembering the word of “Bardonecchia” once, snowboarders shall never forget it.

According to the Italian news, it is already snowing in the Alps, and as predicted, this year it shall be enough of snow to make Via Lattea really milky, Mont Blanc – white and Monterosa – light pink.
