A group of Saudi women supported the carrying out of a national discussion concerning the granting of the right to drive to local women. This action is planned for the beginning of 2008 in Saudi Arabia .

The problem is that till now the Saudi legislation does not allow women to drive a car. From time to time this question is discussed in public circles of the country; however the decision is still far away from being taken. Religious figures are opponents of this "democratic freedom" for women, declaring, that the car would give them the possibility to drive freely across the country and to meet other men without the control of their relatives and according to the strict dogmas of Islam that is unacceptable.

In turn the activists of the movement for the rights of women say, that there is nothing told in the dogmas of Islam about the fact that a woman cannot drive car, and many Saudi women work in official institutions and in private companies on the same level with men, that yet is not forbidden by the Islamic legislation.

The initiators of the project among which there is a number of politicians, say, that in order not to displease the population and not to create problems, the practice of female driving could begin in the big cities - such, as Jeddah and Riyadh. "In other areas it can cause unnecessary fermentation of minds", - they conclude.

Unlike other Islamic countries, in Saudi Arabia women are not authorized to drive a vehicle. Also it is forbidden to them to participate in the elections.
