The Swedes Decide With Whom to Celebrate Christmas on the Threshold of the Holiday |
It is peculiar to the human nature that even pleasant events may become the object of discord. Shall we celebrate Christmas with my parents or with yours? This question annually arises in numerous families and sometimes causes real storms of feelings and quarrels. According to the statistics, Christmas is the most scandalous, certainly only from this point of view, holiday of the year in Sweden. Such conclusions can be drawn from the questionnaire conducted by the magazine “We, Parents” among 1155 parents, the number of men among them being only 157.
According to the respondents’ or, rather, female respondents’ answers, the biggest difficulties arise in relations with their husband’s parents. One fourth of the women who had filled in the questionnaire consider getting along with his relatives rather difficult, half of them – that their mother-in-law could be of more help to them, and one third wished grandparents from their husband’s side would show more interest in their grandchildren.
Maybe, that is why the majority of women say that their families spend more free time with their parents than with their husbands’ parents.
Since Christmas traditionally wakens a small child waiting for wonders and presents in each person, most parents of small children believe that their partners, either husband or wife, depending on the respondent’s gender, behave like real children at their parents’ home.
The most irritating thing is that grandparents on both sides give children too many presents and too many sweets. Each fifth respondent considers that the elders interfere in the education process and break the established rules.
However, on the whole the majority of families with small children are pleased with their mothers-in-law and fathers-in-law. 4 out of 10 women and each second man say that the elders spend with children as much time as they want; and to each fifth woman and each fourth man the time spent seems much longer than they expected.
