Tourists will be fined for wearing bathing suits

Authorities of the Dominican Republic have decided to forbid wearing too open bathing suits. They also propose to introduce a penalty of some thousand of dollars. This measure applies first of all to the foreign tourists, which come every year in huge quantities to have a rest on the magnificent beaches of this country.

With all this going on it is considered, that local people are dressed quite properly though it is contrary to our conception of languid pretty girls of Latin America and passionate machos. It is just necessary to take into account that they have their own idea about propriety.

Slinky clothes for women are considered to be normal in case it is for a very young girl or an elderly fatty. Also it is absolutely normal to uncover your stomach - this part of body is supposed to be almost the main attribute of woman’s attraction. Low-necked dresses or absence of underwear are impossible.

Almost all the countries of Latin America are very Catholic. In many of them abortions are forbidden, and girls are brought up as strictly as possible. Latin American woman, for example, never sits down straddling, even if she wears trousers. It is considered to be immoral.

Thus it is no wonder, that it is not only unacceptable but even dangerous to sunbathe topless on the beaches of South America. You can provoke scandal or even attack. Probably, private beaches that belong to the large hotels make an exception, provided that only the Europeans and the Americans have a rest there, and there is a guard.

It is also necessary to consider that Latin American society is patriarchal. It is not accepted, when a decent woman visits bars or beaches alone. Especially if she is a foreigner - she could attract absolutely “needless” attention. Therefore it is better to have a rest with your company.

It is a little bit easier for men. The only thing, that they should avoid, is to appear in public places with gold chains, expensive watches and other precious things. Such measures are connected with a quite high crime rate.
