According to the study of the 60 biggest cities in the world carried out by the British newspaper “Independent”, London was declared “the world’s capital”.
During this study, the results of which were published on Saturday, 22 December, the newspaper had been comparing for several months such data as population, financial markets, level of development of tourism, transport infrastructure and transport, sports and cultural events. As a result, London was declared the winner.
Among other things, the British capital has won due to the fact that the first subway in the world was built here, as well as that it had twice hosted the Olympic Games during the last century (in 1908 and 1948), not taking in attention other multiple major sport events like Tour de France, and that one of the biggest stock exchanges in the world is situated here. However, one of the major indicators might have been its multi-nationality. According to Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of the British capital, “London has established as the world’s first financial centre and the biggest city. Citizens of London are proud of its “unity of diversity” and consider the city’s multiple culture one of its greatest advantages”. Since more than 300 languages are spoken in London, it may be called “the most international city in the world”.
In the rating made by the “Independent” London is followed by New-York, Paris, Tokyo, Chicago, Madrid, Washington, Los-Angeles and Rome. Addis Ababa and Beirut enclose the list.
