Harry Potter’s fans all over the world have obtained one more “relic” which is already popular among them. On the cemetery of the Israeli town of Ramleh you may see the grave of the real Harry Potter who died 68 years ago.

Buried in the Israeli land, Harry is not the prototype of the internationally known boy with a scar on his forehead. This is a mere coincidence; however, it extremely pleases all lovers of Joanne Rowling’s works. Potter who rests on the war cemetery is a young fellow who had died at the age of 19 years and 10 months. According to the carving on the gravestone, he died while fulfilling the task in Hebron in 1939.

The real Harry Potter was a soldier of the king George VI. He had served in the First Worcestershire battalion and had been sent to Palestine for settlement of the Arabian-Israeli conflict. His regiment had a complicated task and the young Harry Potter’s life ceased on 22 July, 1939, in a skirmish that took place in the outskirts of Hebron on the west shore of the river Jordan.

On the whole, according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, 20 Harry Potters have died in battles all over the world. Graves with this name can be found both in sand-dunes of Lebanon and in the centre of Europe. Till recently the information about the deceased soldiers was familiar only to the Committee representatives. However, a couple of years ago a young Israeli photographer who had been shooting in cemeteries placed the shot in the Internet. After this his web-site became the centre of attention of numerous fans of the mythical Potter. Ever since a modest war cemetery in Ramleh has witnessed an unprecedented tourist flow. Unlike the graves of other Potters, the grave of the 19-year old namesake of the young magician became rather popular. Its popularity has overcome the popularity of the last burial place of Ben-Gurion, the nation’s father, or of Yitzhak Rabin who was killed by the extremist Jew’s bullet.

Since the number of visitors has increased with the course of time, the narrow path leading to Potter’s grave was broadened, and a parking place was arranged near the entrance. The new place of interest became so popular that the Mayor’s Office of Ramleh included the English war cemetery in the list of objects recommended for tourists together with two crusaders’ towers built in the epoch of the Ottoman Empire.
