Egypt is Going to Copyright the Images and Copies of Pyramids |
Egyptian parliamentarians are going to enact the law, which will forbid producing the copies of Egyptian antiquities – whether it is pyramids or sphinx – without the approval by the authorities of the country. Those who would like to make a copy should pay for grant of permission. All the money will be spent to upkeep the historical monuments.
The general secretary of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities Zahi Hawass has told BBC that the question is about a peculiar kind copyright, with that, it is supposed that the operation of law will be applied also outside Egypt.
The law will concern the full sized copies of any work of art or household item kept in Egyptian museums. The commercial use of Egyptian pyramids’ and sphinx’s copies will be also regulated by the new law. The government authorization will be needed even for private use.
It is expected that the law will not forbid the artists to reproduce Egyptian antiquities, but only in case when the question will be about work of authorship, not the precise copy. Thus, the “Luxor” hotel in American Las Vegas will not have problems, because the building represents a slightly changed copy of the ancient pyramid. However, the administration of the hotel will not have the right to state that “Luxor” – is the “only pyramid shaped building in the world” anymore.
The new law can seriously disserve various theme parks all over the world; after all the copies of pyramids and sphinx, as a rule, attract people.
Egyptian pyramids are the greatest landmarks of ancient Egypt; there is one of the seven wonders of the world among them – the Great Pyramid of Giza. Currently, there are considered to be 110 pyramids altogether in Egypt. The last one was found in the year 2002 by the Swiss archaeologists, who excavated the burial of the pharaoh Radjedef – the son and successor of Cheops.
While excavating around the unfinished pyramid of Radjedef, the researchers came across the smaller burial, probably the one of the pharaoh’s sister, wife or daughter. Unfortunately, the scientists didn’t find the mummy, because the tomb was opened by the ancient pyramid raiders. |
