There is no better place, with which it is necessary to begin the first acquaintance with city, than the market Saint-Antoine where the city dwellers and visitors, strolling along the square, look in the trading places, taste, smell, - in one word choose that what later on will be eaten during a fine dinner or a pleasant supper. The owners and those who run restaurants are also moving to and fro between the trading places, choosing all the freshest as only fresh products can be worthy to be prepared and to be served to the client.

This is non a coincidence that there is fame about Lyons as about the city of pleasures and the centre of the French nation’s art of cookery. Therefore, probably, the fact that the Lyons inhabitants always were the great gourmets isn’t surprising at all.

The remarkable fact is that there are more restaurants on a square meter of the old part of the city in Lyons than in any other point of the globe. Such dishes as the Lyons sausage, quenelle and tripe are well-known all over the world. But we’ll speak about the meal recommendations a little bit later, and now we shall go to the old areas of Lyons "having had a little bite".

Getting in Lyons, you get into the true history, full of pleasure and adventures. The old city with graceful side streets, called Тraboule, represents the monument to the France past times. Another remarkable side of Lyons is the arisen opinion about the centre of the textile manufacture and silk weaving in the late Middle Ages period. At that time the magnificent markets appeared, and near the holding fairs the whole district of the Renaissance style, which is now is a pearl of the Lyons architectural art, shortly sprang up. Thousands small side streets lead from the elegant and luxurious country houses to the industrial region Croix Rousse with the dark court yards resting against the houses entrances. At the street labyrinths it is possible to come across boushons - small restaurants where the dishes of the true Lyons cuisine - nutritious and at the same time refined – are prepared. One of the most important dishes of this cuisine is offal filled with grapes.

Taking a walk through the old Lyons, situated on the hill Fourviere and finding yourself near the cathedral Saint-Jean, you will meet a set of city buildings of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance epochs. There are the opera theatre and the town hall, situated on the square Plas de Terre among the main sights. Also a big cultural interest represent numerous other squares, such as Bellecour - a meeting place of the local residents; the basilica Fourviere with four octagonal towers and indented walls, erected in the 19-th century; the church Saint-Martin d'Ainay, one of the rare Roman churches, kept in Lyons. Certainly, there is a big variety of museums which do not yield to Parisian museums in any way and attract tourists’ attention too. The richness of the museums’ contents increases due to the perfectly selected surrounding conditions.

What should we taste in this fine city - the centre of the French cuisine? Let us start with the national dishes! So: Sausages, offal, carvel de canu (the national dish with fresh cheese), meat of rabbits in mustard sauce, meat of a wild boar and, certainly, many other things from all huge choice of goods that will be necessarily offered to you.

What should we bring as a gift to the relatives or for the memory for oneself, having filled up the collection of subjects symbolizing already visited countries and cities? Certainly, these are: fabrics, antiques, sweets and delicacies.

The additional recommendations: « The light festival », conducted on the 8-th of December, the open-air festival which is held in green theatres, the hill Furvier - the place with the most beautiful view on city.

After the walk across Lyons you will understand that this city definitely has its own charm...

Lyons - the capital of the silk weaving industry, Three Gallias and the French Resistance - is the incarnation of the best French cuisine, the best museums and the best theatres. In total, for ten years Lyons has become a large metropolis with blossoming parks, skyscrapers, ancient squares and markets, musical and other festivals - city where the success of the past lives in harmony with the purposes in connection with the future.
