Only the simple list of things to see in the capital of Japan, the city of Tokyo could take more than one page. It is impossible to understand and find the place in the heart for this city in one visit - it is too various, complicated, delicate and unpredictable. The rush of the life, co-existence of the most progressive tendencies and respect to the traditions - this is probably hard to find in our quickly changing world. So this would be a short introduction into this city.
Huge megapolis, beating constantly it's own records, constantly changing from free behavior to it's own rush into the far away. The earthquakes and fires have resulted the situation when there is nothing to be called a historical old part of the city. There are no traces of the dwellings of the first noble inhabitants from the XII-th century. There are no more stores of the XVII-th century that are related to the Edo epoch, when the city had already one million of inhabitants. All that has been long ago burnt, destroyed, demolished and the new buildings were constructed above. The city each time, after the next catastrophe, like a mushroom after the rain - is being reconstructed becoming all the time more modern and bigger.
From the two sightseeing decks of Tokyo you can see the completely inhabited landscape (from a tower which is 333 meters high), that is split into dozens of separate cities melted together. Each of those has it's own center, skyscrapers surrounded with village districts and millions of small wooden houses. But there is a green oasis, bordered with pits and walls among this variety of roofs. This is the Emperor's house where he lives with his family. These self-restrained beautiful old-Japan style constructions are located at the remains of a samurai fortress - being some time ago the only stone construction in this area.
As before, the most popular shopping area - the famous Ginza with the glamorous boutiques, shops-palaces, theaters and restaurants. In one districts you could find a perfect range of electronics and computers, in another you will find widest variety of books that would satisfy the most delicate needs and desires.
The noisy commercial places, light advertisements in huge amounts at first impress, astonish, capture but after that - make tired and worn out. You could escape from this neon light, the stone jungle into the small yards with shops, snack-bars and bonsai gardens. You can also chill-out in the Riokana - traditional hotels with thatch floor-mats and screens dividing the rooms. After the entrance, the guest changes the clothes to a light kimono and home slippers.
The best time to visit Japan is the end of March - May or October-November. Besides the usual moderate weather (it is relatively dry and shiny, the temperature is about 15-20 centigrade, but a warm sweater and umbrella could be in demand), you could see the sakura blossom in spring, which flows as a pink-white cloud over the whole country in the beginning of the April. After the September the weather conditions are similar, but instead of sakura Japan will offer you the endless variety of the Autumn colors with the majority of the maple red.
Tokyo is the cultural and scientific center with the oldest private and governmental universities, more than 400 picture galleries, several dozens of state, municipal and other museums and lots of unique peculiarities that worth to be presented in another parts of the story about the biggest "village" in the world! |
