Greenlanders are Looking Forward to Global Warming |
Global warming is considered to be a sign of the imminent natural disaster in many regions of the world. To the contrary, the inhabitants of Greenland – the self-governing Danish province, think that this process has its undoubted advantages.
As told by local authorities, due to melting of glaciers and constant temperature rise, which already reaches 20 C above zero in summer time, the vegetative period is becoming longer.
Meanwhile, people on the biggest island, plant in the severe environment of the far North only the early-ripening varieties of potatoes and cold-resistant turnip.
However, according to experts, due to climate changing the assortment of cultivated vegetables could be expanded through planting, for example cabbage or salad.
As told by Greenland farmer Bent Oleson, it is not impossible that in the future seal hunters and fishermen will start cultivating vegetables and strawberry. Oleson himself has recently switched to agriculture; in one of the island’s regions he has built a network of greenhouses, which are heated all the year round with the help of solar cells.
As a result, he managed to gather a rather good crop of tomatoes and even bananas with good palatability.
The scientists have determined that the process of melting of glaciers which cover Greenland is happening more quickly than they expected. Considering that in the year 2004 the area of ice cover in South-Eastern part of the island decreased at 50-100 cubic kilometers per year, now this index has grown to 300 cubic kilometers over the same period. In other words, according to data from satellites, the glaciers in Greenland are melting four times faster than ten years ago. |
