The federal territories of Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg are considered to host the most colorful and grandiose markets attracting thousands of people. One of the most colorful and famous Christmas markets is held on the market square of the Old city near the famous church Frauenkirche in Nuremberg. By an old tradition, it is opened by a gold-winged angel. Its role is played by a local girl who had won a special contest. And each time the local press briefly argues, whether the winner should be Catholic or Protestant.
For more than half a century, on the second Thursday of December, two thousand Nuremberg schoolchildren with hand-made lanterns in their hands parade through the evening city to the Christmas market. The Nuremberg “Christkind” (“The Infant-Christ”) solemnly reads gospel texts from the balcony of the church Frauenkirche and invites everyone to his Christmas party accompanied by the festive music. Decorations of the Christmas crib are arranged in the centre of the market where alive actors illustrate the Gospel story about the Jesus Christ’s birth.
In order to get absorbed in the festive atmosphere of the Christmas markets and enjoy their fairy-tale enchanting spectacle, taste Christmas cakes and drink a cup of hot mulled wine from 2 to 4 million tourists all over the world arrive in Nuremberg, Dresden and Munich each year.
However, the last years the police sets special cameras on such markets in order to monitor pickpockets and criminal elements who come here from Germany’s neighboring countries in order to palm off false money on sellers. |
