December Holidays in the Netherlands |
The last month of the year is a long-awaited time not only for children. The most popular December events in the Netherlands are loved by the Dutch of all ages. Moreover, foreign tourists visit the country to witness some of them. In December Holland shall host: the Holiday of Candles, Winter festival in the entertainment park Efteling, Dickens’s Holiday, Christmas spectacle in the Het Loo palace, as well as overall circus performances, holiday fairs and music festivals.
The annual Holiday of candles begins on Tuesday, 11 December, in the medieval town of Gouda. It shall be celebrated for the 52nd time. You can get to this town by train from Amsterdam or Hague. It is easy to imagine that you are living in the Middle Ages when thousands of candles are lit on the central town square. The event lasts all day long. Holiday markets and concert pavilions are arranged in the center of the town. And in the evening the guests shall enjoy the captivating ceremony of fir-tree lighting and dancing.
The entertaining park Efteling shall be opened in the period of school holidays from 22 December to 6 January. The Efteling park invites its guests to have an unforgettable party time on Christmas and on the New Year’s Eve. The 55-year old park has opened special winter attractions, an enormous skating-rink, a museum, a fairy-tale wood and a gallery of games. There are hotels, bungalow and cafes attached to the park. The Dickens’s Festival in Deventer shall resemble the town of the 19th century where the English writer Charles Dickens had lived. An original carnival shall serve as salt of the holiday at weekend on 15 and 16 December. 750 characters from books of the great writer shall walk along the city streets. Each year this festival is visited by more than 100 000 guests. The entrance to the festival is free. The celebration shall take place in the centre of the town where all shops, galleries and cafes shall be opened.
Christmas in the Het Loo palace shall take place from 18 December to 6 January in the royal palace of the same name. The palace itself shall have an unusual look. It shall be transformed by means of numerous garlands and flowers. Trees shall be draped with beautiful brocade, decorated with crystals, silver candelabrums and colorful fruits. Christmas decoration of the palace annually attracts thousands of curious visitors. |
