A Tulip-shaped Island to Be Built in the Netherlands |
The Netherlands are going to change the map of Europe. Dubai has already built palm-shaped islands. At present, the Netherlands prepare construction of an artificial tulip-shaped island meant to assist their over-populated lands and protect the shore from the rising sea.
Supporters of the construction claim that this shall serve an example of controlling the power of water which is rather relevant for the Netherlands in conditions of the global warming. Their opponents say that firstly such construction is very expensive and secondly can affect the ecosystems.
The poll, carried out in November, showed that citizens of the country are more afraid of flooding than of a terrorist attack. They believe that this experiment shall protect them from the approaching water. It is known that Holland is a low-lying country, and water is always trying to return its territory conquered by people. Approximately 40% of lands are situated below the sea level. Politicians claim that the country needs new lands, since “citizens of the Netherlands live virtually on one another”.
Certainly, this project is very expensive. The 50-km long island with the total area of 100 thousand hectares shall cost approximately 10 billion Euros. However, modern technologies make the implementation of this project quite real.
Independent environment groups claim that the artificial island may affect navigation, fishing and migrating species of birds.
“It is not so easy to make the things you want in the North Sea. In the Persian Gulf, where the palm islands have been built, the height of waves does not make more than 2 meters, and here the height of waves is up to 10 meters. The North Sea is one of the richest seas in the world. The island shall considerably harm the coast fauna”. Some experts claim that fortification of the present coastline would be a more appropriate variant. |
