In the nearest future the number of US airlines is going to provide their customers Internet access right during the flight. Thus, already on Tuesday ‘Jet Blue Airways’ will let the passengers of one of their planes use electronic mail and instant messaging system. Other companies – ‘American Airlines’, ‘Virgin America’, and ‘Alaska Airlines’ are planning to offer the wider range of internet-services in the coming months. However, as supposed by New York Times, the services will have to be paid for.
During the take-off and landing it will be impossible to connect to the web, but after drifting up the owners of laptops will be able to send messages via worldwide web. And ‘Virgin America’ is planning to provide with Internet access even those, who are traveling without a laptop or Smartphone; -- in its liners the passengers will have the possibility to use a special screen. Now, the passengers of ‘Virgin’ can order food and drinks via a small computer.
In spite of the fact that new technologies will be able to provide telephone communications aboard, the representatives of airlines do not hurry to offer such opportunities to their costumers. Other passengers could dislike the fact that some talkative fellow-traveler is discussing the flight with somebody. And if there are several dozens of such travelers, the trip can turn into a real nightmare.
The companies admit, that Internet aboard is still fated to work much more slowly than on the ground, and the technicians will have to eliminate the numerous problems. This is one of the reasons why the users will not have to pay yet. Nevertheless, ‘JetBlue’ will become the first carrier who will let its customers connect to the Internet.
According to recent surveys of ‘Forrester Research’ company, with the flight duration of two – four hours, 25% of the passengers are ready to pay 10 dollars to use Internet. If the flight duration is more than four hours, already 45% of respondents are ready to pay.
‘American Airlines’ and ‘Virgin America’ promise to provide their customers with network access already in Spring of the year 2008. ‘Alaska Airlines’ pursuing the same goal, intends to use the special satellite system – in one of the company’s liners Internet will be accessible already in the second quarter of the year 2008. In case of success all the planes of ‘Alaska Airlines’ will be fitted with corresponding equipment by the end of the year 2009. |
