In the middle of December the samurais came to the streets of Tokyo |
The story about 47 samurais is of a particular importance for the Japanese. It happened about 300 years ago and has so strongly penetrated the culture of the country, that the quantity of art compositions, plays and verses initiated to this theme amounts to many hundreds.
Every year the Japanese recollect the feats of samurais on the event anniversary – 14th of December. In the temple with the stone graves of heroes, the fancy-dress productions take place. They tell the symbolic story of faith and humility. According to the legend, a lord Kyra who wished his teacher Asano death, incensed him intentionally when they were in the temple. It happened so that Asano snatched the sword out and this was considered as a terrible blasphemy and carried the death penalty. Once Asano realized the situation, he made hara-kiri.
The dramatic story isn’t over here. Asano had his faithful servants, 47 samurais. They decided to punish the scoundrel. With great difficulty they took by storm the secured house of the lord Cyra and gained their end – they brought the scoundrel’s head to the grave of their master. After that, it goes without saying, they made themselves hara-kiri.
The Japanese sincerely admire this spooky story. 14th of December - the national feast here. Hundreds and thousands of the Japanese come to the temple to bow down to graves and see the performance. The ceremonial procession of men in traditional suits of samurai with arm in their hands, are going across the streets of Tokyo. |
